Electric Power Generation Assets

UGIES owns electric generation facilities and markets power to wholesale and retail customers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. UGIES recently converted a former coal-fired generation plant to a clean-burning natural gas combined-cycle generating station with 130 MW of capacity. In 2009, UGIES brought on-line a renewable energy project that captures landfill gas to generate electricity. In 2010, UGIES completed a solar generation facility at Crayola.

Conemaugh Power Station

Near Johnstown, PA
Capacity: 1,711 MW (co-owned with six other firms)
Features:
  • Coal-fired plant that uses state-of-the-art emissions controls including electrostatic precipitators, low NOx burners, and wet limestone flue gas desulfurization system.
  • Plant owners agreed to donate a scenic portion of the Buttermilk Falls property to Indiana County as a wildlife refuge.

Hunlock Power Station

Near Wilkes Barre, PA
Capacity: 130 MW
Features:
  • converted a 44 MW coal-fired powered facility to a 130 MW natural gas combined cycle facility
  • Two new General Electric LM6000 turbines
  • Each turbine is arranged with a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (“HRSG”) that generates steam using the heated exhaust from its associated turbine. The steam from the two HRSGs is fed to the existing, refurbished steam turbine to generate additional power, thus allowing the plant to operate in the efficient combined-cycle mode.
  • This highly efficient process allowed UGIES to significantly increase generating capacity without increasing carbon footprint or greenhouse gas emissions.

Broad Mountain Power Station

Hegins, PA
Capacity: 11 MW
Features:
  • The plant generates electricity using landfill gas that would otherwise been burned off and wasted, qualifying this as a Renewable Energy Production Facility by the Federal Government.
  • The facility is one of the largest landfill gas recovery projects in Pennsylvania.

Crayola Solar Park I

Easton, PA
Capacity: 1 MW dc
Features:
  • Project energized May 2010
  • Part of a 2 MW joint project that provides 10% of Crayola’s Easton facilities’ total annual electric consumption and about a third of the energy required to make 3 billion crayons annually.
  • Recipient of Governor’s 2010 Environmental Excellence Award and a $1.5 Million Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority Grant
